What US jobs report (NFP) is and why it moves markets

The Employment Situation report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives the monthly change in non-farm payroll employment, the unemployment rate and average hourly earnings.

Maximum employment is one half of the Federal Reserve's mandate, so a jobs figure far from expectations can reprice US interest-rate expectations and move the dollar, gold and US stock index futures. We rate it high impact: central-bank decisions and the main inflation, jobs, GDP and retail data.
