What US CPI is and why it moves markets

The Consumer Price Index, published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, measures the change over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a basket of goods and services. It is the headline US inflation measure.

Inflation shapes what the Federal Reserve does with interest rates, so a CPI figure away from expectations can reprice US rate expectations and move the dollar, Treasury yields, gold and US stock index futures. We rate it high impact: central-bank decisions and the main inflation, jobs, GDP and retail data.
