What the FOMC meeting is and why it moves markets

The Federal Open Market Committee is the Federal Reserve body that sets the target range for the federal funds rate, the main US policy interest rate. After each scheduled meeting it publishes a statement with its decision.

The federal funds rate feeds through to US borrowing costs, Treasury yields and the dollar. A decision or statement that differs from what markets expected can move the dollar, gold, Treasury yields and US stock index futures sharply. We rate it high impact: central-bank decisions and the main inflation, jobs, GDP and retail data.
