How we collect, check and date our data
Every number should link to its receipt: the source, the date we read it and, where we have one, a saved copy.
Missing one? That's a bug: tell us.
Measured and judged
- MeasuredFrom a source, with its link and the date we read it.
- JudgedOur own estimate or view, labelled, with how we reached it.
Never mixed up. We never pass a judged figure off as measured.
Where data comes from
In order of preference:
- The firm's own pageAs a UK visitor sees it: visible text, not hidden markup.
- Regulators and courtsRegisters, published decisions, court records.
- The firm's announcementsArchived.
- Named mediaReputable financial or trade media, named and dated.
- Community reportsNever enough alone to publish a change in a firm's status.
Sources disagree? We use the one closest to the regulator or the firm's main UK page, and note the other.
How we collect
- Fixed-rule scriptsFirms' public pages, read with fixed rules. Every read is logged and dated.
- No getting around wallsNo bot-wall or log-in workarounds. A page we can't read comes from a public archive copy, or isn't used.
- Automatic stopsA figure that doesn't match its source text isn't published.
How we check
- Script readEvery figure, labelled "read by our script".
- Second automated read, CFD onlyCFD loss-rate figures get an independent second automated read. On 13 October 2026 it matched 16 of 31; each firm's page says what happened to the rest. Other datasets: not yet.
- Disagreements are flaggedNever silently overwritten. A figure changes only after a fresh read from a UK connection confirms it.
Never passed off as a person. Each page says how and when its figures were checked. None calls an automated read a person's check, or says a person re-read a figure unless one did.
Which checks each CFD loss-rate figure has had: CFD method page.
How we date
- Read date, not build dateEach figure shows when we read its source, not when the site was rebuilt.
- Unknown dates say soFor example "Q2 2024, exact date unconfirmed", never a guess.
Publishing gates
A page is built only if it passes its gate. Pages that fail aren't created, rather than published thin and hidden from search engines.
- Firm, broker or exchangeLegal entity and regulator from a primary source, plus at least one figure we collected, with its read date.
- Comparison (X vs Y)Both firms pass the firm gate, plus five or more comparable fields of our own data.
- Rules historyAt least one detected change, with before and after copies.
- "Best for X" listFive or more firms checked against their own terms, with a written method.
Judged. Our own thresholds, not an industry standard.
